HAHAHA there is no way i got the same fact from kailey....GRRR and from the same site....ok lets try this==> The town consists of two distinct parts, the older Città Alta, upon a hill 1200 ft. above sea-level, strongly fortified by the Venetians, and the new town (Citta Bassa) below, the two being connected by a funicular railway

The two parts of Bergamo are separated, both physically and symbolically, by the powerful Venetian Walls, which were built by the Serenissima Republic of Venice in the second half of the 16th century to defend the city.

The walled city of Citta Alta actually still closes down its protective gates each night, I believe when the clock tower strikes 12. It sounds very Cinderella-ish, but I remember because my friends live in Bergamo and we spent a lot of time in Citta Alta and we had to make sure we left before we were locked in at night!

Source: personal experience! (I only point this out, not to brag, but because Citta Alta and Bergamo as a whole is seriously one of my most favorite places on earth!!!)

Originally a Gallic town, Bergamo became an independent commune in the 12th cent. It came under the rule (1329-1427) of the Visconti and then of Venice until 1797, when it was included in the Cisalpine Republic.
