The distinctive modern designs for which Milan has become famous in clothing, furniture, graphics, and automobiles have an older component. The city's giant cathedral, or Duomo, was begun in 1386. Five centuries later it was completed—the whole creating a gothic style like no other. Milan has made its mark as an industrial and financial center that looks north to the rest of Europe. www.NationalGeographic.com
Milan is the only city in Europe whose football teams (soccer here in the United States) have won both the European Cup and the Intercontinental Cup. Both the teams play at Giuseppe Meazza - San Siro Stadium.
In addition to Italian, approximately a third of the population of western Lombardy can speak the Western Lombard language, also known as Insubric. In Milan, some natives of the city can speak the traditional Milanese language
There are many higher education schools (universities) in Milano for just about every area of study: Science and medical, Architecture and engineering, Business -economic and social-, Language, art and music, Actor and Theatre School, and Fashion and design. But did you know that students in Milano must choose a "career acadamy" (as we started here at VVHS) when they start highschool?- but for them, this is a much bigger deal than it is here because the schools are actually completely separate; on different campuses, with different principals and curriculum, and in different areas of town. The goal is that even students who do not intend to go to one of the sectional universities can still graduate with occupational experience and make something of their lives. (It's a stressful decision to make, though - basically like when our seniors have to decide what to major in, in college- as an 8th grader!)
