"Romans" is the root word of "Romance," but in ancient Rome, marriage wasn't pronounced in a ceremony or even leagally recorded; a couple was recognized to be married when a man and women agreed to live together, or when a woman's father paid the man's father the right amount of money (or sheep, or pigs... a dowery).

While "romans" is actually the root word for "romance", there wasn't a lot of it in Ancient Rome when it came to marriage. There was no one to conduct the ceremony, and no legal register of it.
A marriage was recognized when a man and woman agreed to live together, or when there was evidence of a dowry having been paid.

Divorce was a lot simpler, though. You just packed up your togas and left. ha
